"The students at Red Shirt are extraordinary because they reside on the reservation yet their hearts are filled with goodness and hope for the future. Many come from dysfunctional homes and carry the weight of the world on their young shoulders, but their spirits are strong. We, the staff at Red Shirt assist them in anyway possible to achieve greatness and success."

Red Shirt Elementary School
Red Shirt, South Dakota
"First of all I want to thank you for extending your kindness and generosity in our direction. I’ve been thinking about my students and I’m not sure where to begin. Students are bussed in from the Kyle, Porcupine, and Manderson districts. Most are living in poverty and their families have sent them to our school because they believe their children will get a better education in this school. I would say that at least three-fourths of our staff are native. We don’t have a gang problem in the school, maybe because we are so remote. Our principal tries hard to create a safe environment for everyone.
All the students need clothes, especially winter wear and shoes. Life is very difficult on the reservation, even when you are employed.
I know that many of my students are living with grandparents or relatives and don’t get to go shopping or go someplace just for recreation. I could go on and on about the difficulties but I would get extremely depressed. I try to give my students hope each and every day. I tell them what it was like when I was growing up in Porcupine. I keep stressing that if you work hard that good things will come to you. I also remind them that education is very important and that they are in school to learn. The Unci/grandma mode comes out regularly! I really love my students, I just love children in general."
